RE: Disc Brake Pads

Well, I know it's been a LONG time since I started this post and asked my question, but there was a method to my madness.
I was waiting until my Road King was ready for the 10,000-mile service so I could have the dealer change the pads for me during the service.
All I can say is, WOW!
Thanks to all of you who recommended the Lyndall "Z" pads.
The bike has NEVER stopped so well (including in the rain), they're silent, and disc brake dust seems to be a thing of the past.
Only time will tell what effect the "Z" pads may have on the rotors, and what kind of mileage I'll get out of them, but so far - I'm a believer.
Thanks again for the recommendation.

RE: Thunder In The Valley

Hawg Man
Just got back from the Doc. He said he did not think I would be able to ride
for another two months. There goes my summer! Does not look good for TITV rally.
kpapa
Get the hell well.
There's always next year.

RE: Thunder In The Valley

I have a family reunion as well as some legal matters I have to attend to while I'm up there, so I'll no doubt be there at least a week.
Let me know if you're planning to attend and we'll discuss it.

Hawg Man
Where in Pennsylvania and when in June? Been cooped up here all spring. Maybe I
will be able to ride by then.
kpapa
Johnstown, PA - about equa-distance between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.
Google Thunder In The Valley.
They have a GREAT website.
This is the 10th Anniversary, so it should be quite a bash.

Anyone headed to Pennsylvania next month for the TITV rally?
If so, give me an e-mail address and maybe we can make arrangements to hook up for a cold root beer.

RE: mpg???

I agree, the a/f ratio is out of whack. Wonder if they just slapped the racetuner on without any setup? Just pull in front of someone on the road and look in the rear view. If they're wiping their eyes and coughing up a lung, you might be running rich.
LOL
Kinda reminds me of back in the day when we had a couple guys with 3-cylinder, 2-stroke Kawasakis that rode with our group.
We ALWAYS made them ride in the rear.
Otherwise - we would all get so much oil covering our glasses we couldn't see after about 2 or 3 miles.
True story.

RE: mpg???

Was the bike dynoed after the installs? That might help. Unfortunately the lean condition and the high heat go hand in hand. Better airflow through the engine requires more fuel to keep the stoichiometry in the proper range. This is accompanied by the increase in hp/torque usually.
I agree with King of the Road - but only to a point.
If the gas mileage has dropped nearly 50%, then that would mean the amount of fuel going through the engine has INCREASED by roughly 50%.
Right?
Would that then mean the engine is ingesting and moving 50% more air?
And would it then follow that it's making 50% more horsepower?
I seriously doubt either one applies.
Have someone ride close behind you and see if they can smell what appears to be an over-rich exhaust.
I won't attempt a guess at exactly what the problem is, but that much of a difference in mpg tells me there's something else going on.
Have you pulled the plugs to look at the color?
My '05 Road King has a Stage 1 Kit, SE slip on mufflers and a True Dual kit.
I get 45-46 mpg.
It USED to run hot with the Stage 1 and SEs - but it has cooled down significantly since installing the True Duals, even though the True Duals don't seem to have made a measureable difference in the mpg.

RE: slip on mufflers

Hey! thanks I hope your not wrong, the bike sounds great just siting in the
garage running, waiting for warm weather to check it out on the road,if too
loud I'll put the stock ones back on. would like to hear from any one else
on this matter. Cheers bob
Bob, I'm sure you've heard it before, but..................
"An engine is nothing more than an air pump".
That means the more air you can get into it - the more air you can get through it - the more air you can get out of it - the better it's going to run.
Doesen't matter if it's a Top Fuel dragster, a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower, or your Harley.
The principal is the same.
You've taken the first step of providing the engine with a better means for getting rid of air, so you WILL notice a difference.
Adding the Stage I kit will help get more air into the engine, and you'll no doubt feel a difference if you do that as well.
Then, it's just a matter of having the computer re-flashed to allow the new mods to work properly.
Re-flashing the computer will adjust the fuel and advance curves to compensate for the increased air flow.
The Stage I kit is pretty pricey.
A K&N filter is cheaper.
The Stage I kit comes with a K&N filter.
Do the math.

Anybody got a pic of how a 2 into 1 looks on a dresser from the rear?
Just imagine looking down on a Kenworth or Peterbilt from the roof of a building. LOL

RE: Fullsac Performance Header Pipe Modification

I don't remember the part numbers, but Sampson makes heat shields that are the perfect length (2 of them needed) to replace the factory shields.
They eliminate the cutout in the factory shields that exposes the right side pipe.
Glad to hear you're happy with the new True Dual setup.
I sure am.

RE: Handle Bars

I wouldn't think you're an idiot because you had the wrong length bolts. I put new gas caps on my sporty, the next day it wouldn't start. I had no idea what could be the problem. I called the shop, they had no idea. They called a mutual friend, who is NOT a mechanic, he called me and asked what was the last thing I did to the bike. I said the gas caps. He said take one off, it started. I didn't have vented caps. Now I know. There are no mistakes, only learning. If Hawg Man hadn't had his experience, JKen wouldn't have his. At least not as soon as he did. No one is an idiot, we are all just learning as we go.
Geez, Payloader - the idiot comment was made as a joke.
And I would HOPE he took it as such.
Your gas cap story reminds me of yet another time I made a similar mistake, only mine was on a cage.
Were you an idiot for it?
NO - of course not.
Was I?
Well, I guess my answer to that would depend on whether or not you're gonna accuse me of offending myself if I call myself an idiot for what I did.
Come on, we're all bud's here - and if we can't poke a little fun every now and again.................

RE: How long ya been riding?

Oh my God it has been 40 years. How I feel old this morning. Started out on a 65 Honda Super 90, also tryed the kal 2 stroke 750 was to stuped to be afread of the bike. My father rode it one time and it was gone. Told me he saved my life, I gess he did. Been on Harleys sinch 90, 2 sportsters, 03 Road King and now my 07 Heritage softail. New bike only 18,000 on it so far. Riding to Ringold Ga today, I hope a 450 mile round trip ride will help me not feel so old.
rr, you are a true example of what I've always said about how motorcycle riders evolve:
Boys buy Jap bikes................
When you hit puberty, you buy a Sportster..........
And when you finally become a man - you buy a Hog.
The 3 stages of human development:
Infancy
Puberty
Adultery

RE: Handle Bars

Hawg Man, my hat's off to you. That was the trick. I felt kind of silly even putting this question out there, but I knew somebody out there would have a fix. Thanks again man.
More often than not, when someone comes up with the right answer to a problem someone is having, it's because they've experienced the same Brain Fart you're having.

RE: Handle Bars

The bike is a 2005 Harley Lowrider. the risers are after market but were
ordered by the Harley dealer. They are the original one inch bars. The bars fit nicely between the risers and the top cap but will not tighten down. They don't move real easy but they shouldn't move at all. Hitting a large bump would move them quite a bit. The bars have a knurling on them, maybe the risers and cap need roughing up but the stock risers weren't knurled either.
Yeah, I know - this is the dumbest thing it could possible be.
But sometimes, the dumbest thing turns out to be the LAST thing people check.
And guess what?
Are you sure the bolts aren't too long and they're bottoming out before they 100% clamp the risers together?
Sure, they'll tighten - but they won't pull the top and bottom of the risers together tight enough.
Humor me - check it.

RE: How long ya been riding?

Learned to ride in 1963 on a friend's 305 Honda Dream.
Bought my first bike used from a classified ad - it was a '67 450 Honda.
I rode it home the day I bought it and that was the LAST time I could ever get it to run.
Traded it in on a................
Brand new 1974 Yamaha XS650.
Sold that to buy a.............
Brand new 1978 Harley-Davidson Superglide.
Sold it last September to buy a..................
Used (4,000 miles) '05 H-D Road King Classic.
So, to answer your original question:
44 YEARS.

RE: Handle Bars

Sounds like pretty much of a no-brainer.
You have the wrong size risers for the size (diameter) of your bars.

RE: Disc Brake Pads

When it's time for new tires, switch to blackwalls...
WOW!!!!!!!!
What an astute, ingenius and profound suggestion.
Do you suggest I also paint my chrome rims and stainless steel spokes flat black so the disc brake dust won't show on them either? :h

RE: boot mark

Doesn't scraping the pipes with a razor blade scratch the chrome?
Use the razor blade as if you're shaving a peach.
Laquer thinner works great for cleaning off any remaining residue or discolorization.
Just don't get the thinner on any painted surface.
